CHAPTER 9
At first, I thought the pair were Andy Moore and Icepick Jones until I remembered one was supposed to be a Rottweiler. The driver moved the car through Manhattan traffic, hit the Queens Midtown Tunnel and took the main road toward the airport. Everything was done so calm and deliberate that I wanted to tell the guy to step on it and get it over with.
He finally sped up when we hit a stretch of road with no cars.
âWhere are we going?â I asked.
âYouâll find out,â said the one in the back. âToo bad you kept the car.â
I nodded. âYou had a nice package under the hood for me.â
The driverâs ear twitched, and the pressure of the barrel on my neck eased. âLike it?â The dog licked his lips. Spotting a way out, I ran with it.
âReal funny, I had to have a mechanic pull the bomb rigged to the ignition. Wasnât going to touch the car otherwise.â
The dogâs eyes widened, thinking I hadnât found the second trigger, and he slammed on the brakes. Not exactly what I had in mind, but I wasnât about to complain. The Doberman in the back seat pitched forward, and I grabbed him by the throat. While the car careened to the side, the driver swore, and a gun went off. The dog I held might have been littler than the other, but he made a good enough shield against his partnerâs gun. I pressed the body into the bigger dog so that he had a tangled mess of body and clothes to get through before he could train his gun on me. By that time, Iâd reached over the corpse with claws out and raked his arm. The dog screamed, and somehow I managed to get hold of one of the guns and shoot him through the eye.
Things happened so fast that it was a wonder we didnât have an audience. The car up the road was still too far away and a couple of cubs out in the field pointed, but who knows what they were saying. I pulled both bodies to the passenger side, sitting them upright, and ran around the car to get behind the wheel. Driving back the way weâd come, I found a cutoff near the airport and drove to the end where a big, Dead End, sign stood.
I couldnât help being funny and propped the two bodies against the sign and drove back home. Cleaning the front seat would be a pain, but I knew a couple of vampire bats that would take care of the problem for a fee.
By the time I got back to the apartment, it was late. I called to Daisy to remove the chain, but it wasnât on the door. Cursing, I searched the apartment, but she was gone along with all her things.
Angry at the situation, I called Duke. When he answered the phone I asked, âDo you know Daisy Zahn?â
âZahn? Kaiser, whatââ
âDaisy was hiding out at my apartment, and now sheâs gone.
